Trauma Surgery: The Department of Trauma Surgery at the Orthopaedic Hospital of The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of limb and joint injuries. It has achieved remarkable expertise in managing pelvic and acetabular fractures, as well as complex fractures of the limbs and joints. The department primarily treats pelvic fractures, limb joint fractures, and open injuries, including but not limited to nonunion fractures, multiple fractures, shoulder joint fractures and injuries, humeral fractures, elbow injuries, ulna and radius fractures, wrist injuries, hip injuries, femoral neck fractures, periprosthetic fractures, intertrochanteric fractures, femoral fractures, patellar fractures, tibiofibular fractures, comminuted ankle fractures, talus fractures, foot fractures and dislocations, traumatic bone defects, traumatic limb length discrepancies, malunion fractures, post-fracture nonunion, bone and joint infections following trauma, post-traumatic osteomyelitis, traumatic epiphyseal slippage in children, removal of internal fixation devices, and open soft tissue injuries.
Since the 1990s, the department was the first in the province to introduce AO internal fixation theory and technology, implementing standardized fracture treatment. This significantly improved fracture healing rates, reduced disability rates, and restored patients' ability to work, generating substantial social benefits. In recent years, it has pioneered minimally invasive fracture surgery in the province. Under the leadership of Dr. Wu Dankai, a leading figure in minimally invasive orthopaedics in Jilin Province, the department has innovatively applied minimally invasive techniques to treat fractures across various body regions. This approach has markedly reduced surgical trauma and shortened fracture healing time, achieving nationally first-class standards. The department performs over 2,000 minimally invasive fracture surgeries annually, placing it at the forefront of the field in China.
It was also the first in the province to treat complex periarticular fractures (such as acetabular fractures, pelvic fractures, tibial plateau fractures, and elbow fractures), achieving excellent outcomes and preserving joint function. The department admits more than 3,000 patients each year, making it one of the largest of its kind in the province.
