Department Introduction

The First Department of Neurosurgery of The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University was established in 1988 and was recognized as a Key Medical Specialty in Changchun by the Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission in 2016. It is a renowned neurosurgical center in the province.

Professor Guan Wenming, the department director, was honored as the Academic Leader of Changchun’s "13th Five-Year Plan" Key Medical Specialty in 2016. He serves as the Vice Chairman of the Jilin Provincial Neurosurgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Vice Chairman of the Jilin Provincial Neurosurgery Branch of the Physician Association, Judicial Appraisal Expert of the Jilin Provincial High People’s Court, and Editorial Board Member of the Chinese Journal of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery. Over the years, Professor Guan has led the department’s colleagues in continuous exploration and innovation, driving significant advancements in medical care, teaching, and scientific research.

The First Department of Neurosurgery of The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University boasts a professional medical team consisting of 14 doctors, including 3 professors, 3 holders of doctoral degrees, 2 with overseas study experience, and 4 master’s supervisors. The department also has 32 specialized nursing staff.

The department employs advanced specialized grouping, with five professional teams: Cranial Nerve Surgery, Brain Tumor, Cerebrovascular Disease, Trauma, and Common Diseases.

Microvascular decompression (MVD) for hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia has been performed in over a thousand cases, with a total effectiveness rate exceeding 98%, earning widespread praise from patients. Recently, the department has introduced a new technique—balloon compression for trigeminal neuralgia. This method is simple, requires no special equipment, has an extremely low rate of serious complications, and is cost-effective, making it popular among both doctors and patients.

Minimally invasive transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary adenomas has been performed in nearly 500 cases. This procedure is short in duration, has a low complication rate, and is affordable. Many patients who were infertile before surgery have restored hormone levels and regained normal fertility after the procedure.

For acoustic neuroma resection, the department now uses neuroelectrophysiological technology to improve surgical outcomes, significantly enhancing facial nerve function preservation and minimizing postoperative impact on patients.

For intracranial aneurysm treatment, the department offers both interventional embolization and craniotomy clipping, providing dual insurance for patients. The most suitable treatment method is selected based on the patient’s condition, ensuring personalized care, improving surgical success rates, enhancing postoperative quality of life, and greatly reducing disability rates. With an annual caseload of 200 procedures, the department’s techniques are at an advanced level in the province, earning recognition from peers and patients.

Interventional and surgical treatments for head and neck artery stenosis are also available. The incidence of head and neck ischemic diseases is increasing yearly. The department employs interventional stent placement, endarterectomy, bypass surgery, and other treatments to address stenosis in advance and prevent catastrophic infarctions. Over a hundred procedures are performed annually, with recanalization surgeries leading the province and significantly improving patients’ symptoms.

The department, in collaboration with the Department of Neurology, has established an Ischemic Stroke Center with a green channel for emergency thrombolysis, thrombectomy, and retrieval in acute cerebral infarction patients, improving prognosis and quality of life.

The department performs over 200 cerebral hemorrhage surgeries annually. Notably, the newly introduced small bone window neuroendoscopy for cerebral hemorrhage has been successfully applied in multiple cases with excellent results. This technique offers advantages such as shorter operation time, minimal trauma, rapid recovery, and low cost, and is currently being actively promoted.

The department also performs surgeries for severe traumatic brain injury, cranioplasty, shunt surgery for hydrocephalus, spinal cord tumor resection, cranio-orbital communication tumor resection, interventional treatment for traumatic carotid cavernous fistula, and interventional and surgical management of cerebral vascular malformations and dural arteriovenous fistulas. Specialized teams, expert doctors, and professional nursing staff provide the most specialized treatment for patients.

The hospital and department are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including two surgical microscopes, two DSA machines, one neuroelectrophysiology system, one neuronavigation system, one neuroendoscope, two surgical power systems, and a micro-bronchoscope, among others.

In recent years, the department has made significant progress in scientific research, publishing 5 SCI papers (with a total impact factor of 9.6), 16 core journal articles, undertaking 3 provincial-level projects and 5横向 projects, with research funding exceeding 250,000 RMB.

Under the strong leadership of the hospital administration and the guidance of Professor Guan Wenming, the First Department of Neurosurgery of The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University remains committed to continuous efforts and wholehearted dedication to providing exceptional medical services to patients.
