Department Introduction

The Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University is an important component of the General Surgery Hospital of The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University. It is a national key surgical specialty, a discipline authorized to confer master's and doctoral degrees in medicine, the Jilin University Diagnosis and Treatment Center for General Surgical Diseases, and the Jilin Provincial Medical Quality Control Center for General Surgery.

Under the leadership of Director Jia Mingku and Deputy Director Wang Yu as academic leaders, the department has continuously improved its levels of medical care, teaching, and research. The Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery currently has one part-time professor from the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery & Artificial Organ Transplantation Surgery at the University of Tokyo, four professors, three associate professors, three attending physicians, and six resident physicians. Among them, one is a doctoral supervisor and five are master's supervisors. All hold at least a master's degree, with six having obtained a medical doctorate. Many have pursued advanced studies in hepatobiliary surgery at renowned domestic hospitals such as Beijing PLA General Hospital (301 Hospital), Changhai Hospital affiliated with the Second Military Medical University, Ruijin Hospital, Zhongshan Hospital, Xinhua Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Eastern Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital, Tianjin Cancer Hospital, Tianjin First Central Hospital, West China Hospital of Sichuan University, and the Endoscopy Center of Guangzhou Medical University. By learning from the strengths of these excellent hepatobiliary surgery hospitals or centers and applying them to our clinical practice, the surgical skills and patient management of our entire department have rapidly improved and reached advanced domestic levels. Meanwhile, our key physicians continue to go abroad to learn advanced technologies and experiences. Many have participated in clinical observerships at the University of Manitoba in Canada, Humboldt University of Berlin in Germany, the University of Tokyo in Japan, and Okayama University in Japan, among others. Through these opportunities, they have thoroughly absorbed and learned foreign surgical techniques, advanced management practices, and surgical concepts, significantly enhancing the department's academic and surgical standards. In the future, the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery will continue to regularly send physicians for training at renowned domestic and international institutions and hospitals.

The department places great emphasis on improving academic standards and theoretical summarization. It has undertaken more than ten national and provincial research projects and publishes over 20 academic papers in national core journals annually. In recent years, it has consistently won more than 10 medical achievement awards.

The department is responsible for the theoretical teaching, clinical clerkships, and animal laboratory training for eight-year, seven-year, and five-year programs, as well as preventive medicine, at the Norman Bethune College of Medicine of Jilin University. The faculty prepares lessons diligently and teaches vividly, receiving high praise from students.

The department performs nearly 2,000 liver, gallbladder, pancreatic, and spleen surgeries annually. These include major and complex procedures such as hemihepatectomy, trisectionectomy, radical resection for cholangiocarcinoma, radical and extended radical resection for gallbladder cancer, surgeries for portal hypertension, pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure), pancreaticoduodenectomy with portal vein resection and reconstruction, complex intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct stones, various reoperative biliary surgeries, and biliary tract injury repairs, all with excellent outcomes. In 2003, the department successfully performed Jilin Province's first allogeneic liver transplantation, and the patient has survived for over ten years. In recent years, the department has actively developed laparoscopic minimally invasive surgeries, making significant progress in areas such as laparoscopic partial hepatectomy, laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy, and laparoscopic splenectomy. The implementation of radiofrequency ablation for liver cancer provides effective treatment for some patients with minimal trauma.

The Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery currently has 46 beds, plus an intensive care unit with 10 beds. The department is equipped with large-scale devices and instruments such as an imported RITA radiofrequency ablation system, an ICG liver function reserve detector, OLYMPUS laparoscopes and choledochoscopes, MAQUET ventilators, an arterial blood gas analyzer, and ultrasonic scalpels.
