The Department of Gastrointestinal Nutrition and Hernia Surgery was established in 2013. It evolved from the former Gastrointestinal Surgery Group and Surgical Nutrition Group of the General Surgery Hospital of The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University. Under the care of the leadership of The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University and the overall management of the General Surgery Hospital, the department has undergone professional development and achieved leapfrog progress. Currently, the General Surgery Hospital is a national key department designated by the Ministry of Health, the Jilin Provincial Quality Control Center for General Surgery, and the Jilin Provincial Training Center for General Surgeons.

The department has 79 beds and operates a specialized outpatient clinic. It currently employs 15 doctors and 28 nurses. Among the doctors, there are 2 professors, 2 associate professors, 8 attending physicians, and 3 resident physicians. Among the nursing staff, there are 4 nurse-in-charge, 6 senior nurses, and 18 staff nurses. Eight medical staff hold doctoral degrees, and five hold master’s degrees. Two doctors have received training abroad, and seven have undergone domestic training. Many are members of national academic organizations. The department currently has three master’s supervisors. Professor Qin Xinyu, leader of the Gastrointestinal Group of the Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and Professor Zheng Minhua, chairman of the Upper Gastrointestinal Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and leader of the Laparoscopy Group of the Chinese Medical Association, serve as adjunct professors of the department. Professor Ren Jian’an from Nanjing Military General Hospital is an adjunct supervisor for doctoral and master’s students.

The department has undertaken 32 research projects funded by the Ministry of Education, Jilin Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Jilin Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission, Jilin Provincial Development and Reform Commission, Changchun Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology, Jilin University, and横向课题 (horizontal projects), with total research funding exceeding RMB 1 million. It has published 83 papers, including 29 SCI-indexed articles, 17 articles in the Chinese Medical Journal series, and 37 articles in core journals. The department has won 5 Jilin Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards and 12 Jilin University Medical Achievement Awards (including one first prize). It has trained 3 doctoral students and 5 master’s students.

The department is dedicated to clinical and scientific research on benign and malignant gastrointestinal diseases. It excels in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant gastrointestinal tumors, complex and critical illnesses, minimally invasive surgery for gastrointestinal tumors, standardized comprehensive cancer treatment, and nutritional support for cancer and critically ill patients. Its expertise is leading in Jilin Province and Northeast China and reaches advanced national levels.

Key Clinical Strengths:

  1. Gastric and Intestinal Tumors:
    Open and laparoscopic standard D2 radical gastrectomy, total laparoscopic radical gastrectomy, vagus nerve-sparing gastrectomy, and total mesogastrium excision are performed at nationally leading levels. The department pioneered a multidisciplinary consultation (MDT) platform for gastric cancer and holds annual national seminars, achieving advanced national standards in multidisciplinary and comprehensive cancer treatment.

  2. Enterocutaneous Fistula and Intra-abdominal Infection:
    In collaboration with Nanjing Military General Hospital, the department initiated the Jilin Provincial Enterocutaneous Fistula Alliance. It provides specialized and standardized treatment for enterocutaneous fistula at advanced national levels and frequently assists other hospitals in the province to resolve complex cases. For severe intra-abdominal infections, inflammatory bowel disease, and acute pancreatitis, the department follows standardized treatment protocols and guidelines, reducing mortality and complications to provincially advanced levels.

  3. Hernia Repair:
    The department skillfully performs various conventional and laparoscopic hernia repairs. It is nationally leading in complex abdominal wall reconstruction and ambulatory hernia surgery under local anesthesia.

  4. Diagnosis and Treatment of Complex Abdominal and Retroperitoneal Tumors:
    The department has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating abdominal and retroperitoneal tumors, particularly in large and highly challenging radical resections, achieving leading provincial levels.

  5. Combined Dual-Endoscopy Therapy:
    The department actively performs laparoscopic minimally invasive surgeries and combined laparoscopic-endoscopic (colonoscopy or gastroscopy) procedures, offering advantages such as minimal trauma, reduced bleeding, faster recovery of bowel function, and shorter hospital stays, reaching leading provincial levels.

  6. Diabetes and Bariatric Surgery:
    For obese patients with type 2 diabetes, the department has established a specialized outpatient clinic and performs minimally invasive surgeries such as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, achieving excellent therapeutic outcomes and leading provincial levels.
