Department Introduction

The Department of Vascular Surgery at The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University is a newly established department, founded in early 2013 with the support and promotion of the hospital’s new leadership. Under the leadership of Director Wang Zheng, the department adheres to the principles of scientific, standardized, and patient-centered clinical practice, comprehensively carrying out the diagnosis and treatment of common and frequently occurring diseases in vascular surgery. Meanwhile, the department actively engages in the prevention of vascular diseases and health education, making proactive efforts in "preventing disease before it occurs."

The Department of Vascular Surgery is a young department, currently with 18 beds and 4 doctors, including one associate professor, one associate chief physician, one attending physician, and one resident physician. All doctors in the department have received training in leading vascular surgery centers in China and maintain excellent communication and cooperation with renowned vascular surgery departments such as Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, and Shanghai Changzheng Hospital.

Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment:

Lower Limb Ischemic Diseases: Acute and chronic lower limb ischemia caused by various reasons is a common disease in peripheral vascular surgery, such as arteriosclerosis obliterans, thromboangiitis obliterans, and acute arterial embolism. The department comprehensively carries out treatments including arterial bypass, arterial exploration and thrombectomy, catheter-directed thrombolysis, balloon angioplasty, and stent implantation. Utilizing the hospital’s hybrid operating room, hybrid procedures combining open surgery and interventional therapy are performed when necessary, achieving excellent outcomes.

Venous and Lymphatic System Diseases: Such as lower limb varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, and lymphedema. The department is equipped with microwave great saphenous vein treatment devices and circulatory pressure devices, offering minimally invasive treatments for lower limb varicose veins. These procedures are characterized by minimal trauma, quick recovery, shortened hospital stays, and excellent cosmetic results, earning widespread praise from patients. For chronic lymphedema, a comprehensive approach combining medication, physical therapy, and pressure therapy has shown significant therapeutic effects. The department is the first in the province to adopt catheter-directed thrombolysis combined with stent implantation for deep vein thrombosis, achieving remarkable results.

Vascular Injuries: The department has extensive clinical experience in managing gunshot wounds, stab wounds, and blunt or sharp injuries caused by traffic accidents, saving patients’ lives and reducing disability rates.

Arterial Aneurysmal Diseases: Such as abdominal aortic aneurysm, visceral artery aneurysm, and peripheral artery aneurysm. Treatments include aneurysm resection with artificial vascular reconstruction and endovascular aneurysm repair.

Arterial Stenosis/Occlusive Diseases: Such as carotid artery stenosis and occlusion, subclavian artery stenosis and occlusion, and visceral artery stenosis (e.g., renal artery and superior mesenteric artery). Both open surgery and interventional therapy are employed.

Vascular-Related Tumors: Such as carotid body tumor, vascular-origin tumors like inferior vena cava leiomyoma, and various tumors involving blood vessels, such as retroperitoneal tumors involving the abdominal aorta or iliac arteries.

Limb Ischemic Functional Loss: Amputation surgeries for limb ischemic necrosis accompanied by infection, such as diabetic foot gangrene infection or limb arteriovenous fistula gangrene infection.

Establishment of Vascular Access for Hemodialysis Patients: Surgeries for autogenous or artificial vascular arteriovenous fistula, which are essential for hemodialysis patients and directly impact their quality of life. The department possesses professional expertise, particularly in managing thrombosis and infections post-fistula surgery.

Abnormal Arteriovenous Fistula Diseases: For congenital or acquired arteriovenous fistulas in limbs, the department employs minimally invasive endovascular techniques, achieving excellent outcomes.

Research and Teaching:

The department currently undertakes two provincial and municipal research projects with a total funding of 60,000 RMB. It has published over 30 academic papers, including one SCI-indexed paper. The department has received three Medical Achievement Awards from Jilin University. It is responsible for the specialized teaching and clinical training of eight-year, seven-year, and five-year program students at the hospital.

The Department of Vascular Surgery is a young, positive, and dynamic collective. We aim to further engage in exchanges, introduce new technologies and therapies, and apply domestic first-class techniques characterized by "simplicity, minimally invasiveness, and optimization." Adhering to the service standards of "safety, effectiveness, and excellence," we strive to innovate and pursue excellence, tailoring the best treatment plan for every patient with vascular disease.
