The Department of Gastroenterology at The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University originated from the Department of Gastroenterology established in 1986 by Professor Song Yufang, a renowned digestive disease expert in Jilin Province. To meet the demands of disciplinary development, the Department of Gastroenterology was officially established in early 2014. Its medical focus is on the diagnosis and treatment of common, frequently occurring, complex, and critical gastrointestinal diseases. The department currently has 30 open beds and employs 29 medical professionals, including 10 doctors and 19 nursing staff. Among them, there are 4 professors and associate professors, and 6 attending physicians. Over 90% of the departmental staff hold medical master's or doctoral degrees, making it a clinical department that integrates medical care, teaching, and research, with the authority to grant master's degrees.
The department is primarily responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. It is equipped with world-class advanced electronic gastroscopes, colonoscopes, endoscopic ultrasound systems, duodenoscopes, and related supporting equipment. The annual average number of gastrointestinal endoscopic examinations and treatments exceeds 35,000 cases. The annual outpatient visits exceed 50,000, with painless gastroscopy and painless colonoscopy techniques leading the province. The inpatient department mainly admits patients with acute, critical, and severe gastrointestinal conditions, such as gastrointestinal bleeding, moderate to severe ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, intestinal tuberculosis, and ascites. The department's effective treatments have earned high praise from patients. Currently, the department independently carries out the following diagnostic and therapeutic techniques: (1) C13 and C14 breath tests for Helicobacter pylori; (2) gastrointestinal polyp resection; (3) endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR); (4) endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for gastrointestinal polyps; (5) endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and common bile duct stone extraction; (6) biliary stricture dilation and internal/external drainage for benign or malignant pancreaticobiliary obstruction; (7) endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding; (8) endoscopic variceal ligation, sclerotherapy, and gastric variceal embolization; (9) dilation for benign and malignant strictures and balloon dilation for achalasia; (10) removal of foreign bodies from the digestive tract; (11) placement of benign and malignant stents in the digestive tract; (12) resection of early gastrointestinal cancers; (13) gastrolith crushing; (14) diagnostic and therapeutic techniques related to endoscopic ultrasound gastroscopy and colonoscopy; (15) endoscopic full-thickness resection (EFR) for gastrointestinal stromal tumors; and (16) submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER).
