The current discipline leaders are Professors Ma Zhongsen and Zhang Jie. Professor Zhang Jie currently serves as a national committee member of the Respiratory Branch and the Disease Prevention and Control Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. The Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine has long been recognized as a committee unit of the Respiratory Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a standing committee unit of the Respiratory Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, one of the first National Key Clinical Specialties designated by the National Health Commission, the only Respiratory Disease Research Institute in Jilin Province (established in 1982), one of the first National Clinical Drug Trial Institutions for respiratory diseases (approved in 2004), the first Pulmonary Function Training Base in Northeast China, a branch and core unit of the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases, and the only institution in Northeast China awarded the National Project for Enhancing the Diagnosis and Treatment Capacity of疑难危重症 (Respiratory Diseases). It leads the province in pioneering respiratory interventional techniques, critical respiratory care, pulmonary function assessment, and pulmonary vascular interventional technologies, which are applied in the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of acute, critical,疑难危重症, as well as common and frequently occurring respiratory diseases.

The discipline comprises 11 specialized groups: Lung Cancer and Pulmonary Nodules, Respiratory Intervention, Interstitial Lung Disease, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Bronchial Asthma, Respiratory Critical Care, Pulmonary Embolism and Pulmonary Vascular Disease, Respiratory Rehabilitation, Sleep-Disordered Breathing, Infections, and Pulmonary Function. The department currently has 83 open beds and a team of 99 medical, nursing, and technical staff, including 22 PhD holders, 5 doctoral supervisors, and 9 national professional committee members. The annual outpatient volume is nearly 40,000 visits, with over 4,000 inpatient admissions and discharges per year. It performs more than 6,000 bronchoscopic interventional procedures and over 9,000 pulmonary function tests annually. Innovative research on the precise diagnosis and treatment of疑难危重症 respiratory diseases using advanced respiratory interventional techniques has been awarded the First Prize of Jilin Province Scientific and Technological Progress Award. The department pioneered the establishment of an early qualitative and localization system for small pulmonary nodules and疑难危重症 cases in China, as well as a systematic, precise, and personalized interventional技术 treatment system for疑难危重症 respiratory diseases. It is the only institution in the province to have established a clinical specimen and information database based on respiratory interventional techniques.
