Department Introduction

Orbital Diseases and Oculoplastic Surgery is an interdisciplinary specialty bridging ophthalmology, neurology, otolaryngology, maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and radiology. It deals with complex conditions that are challenging to diagnose and involve technically difficult surgeries. Orbital surgery is considered high-risk within the field of ophthalmology and is often associated with severe complications. Our department is the only specialized unit for orbital diseases in the province. Over the past six years since its establishment, we have alleviated suffering and restored vision for numerous patients with orbital disorders.

The department currently has four physicians, including one chief physician, two associate chief physicians, and one attending physician. The department director, Cui Jizhe, is a leading expert in orbital diseases in Jilin Province. The head nurse, Wang Jun, who holds a master's degree and is a senior nurse, conducted research at Kitasato University Hospital in Japan. The core academic and clinical team consists of young and middle-aged professionals, all of whom hold doctoral degrees and have international training experience in countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and Singapore. They are the driving force behind the department's development, diligently advancing in their respective academic fields.

The department performs a wide range of procedures, including orbital wall fracture repair, orbitotomy (via cranial, anterior, or lateral approaches) for complex intraorbital tumors, and surgical treatments for lacrimal duct diseases. We also provide both conservative and surgical management for thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy and inflammatory pseudotumors, addressing various complex and challenging orbital conditions. Our treatments effectively resolve symptoms such as diplopia and enophthalmos in patients with orbital fractures, significantly reduce recurrence rates of orbital tumors, and improve surgical success rates, leading to markedly higher cure rates for difficult orbital diseases. Additionally, we perform flap transplants for various eyelid defects, as well as limbal stem cell transplants, conjunctival transplants, and amniotic membrane transplants for a variety of ocular surface diseases. In recent years, we have actively developed minimally invasive surgeries under nasal endoscopy, including orbital wall fracture repair, optic canal decompression, orbital decompression, dacryocystorhinostomy, and sinus-related orbital occupying lesions.

Our department currently oversees one project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Multiple research papers by our team have been indexed in SCI, and we have received numerous provincial and Jilin University Medical Achievement Awards. In August 2010, we successfully hosted the 10th National "Advances in Oculoplastic and Aesthetic Surgery" Workshop.
