The Department of Ocular Fundus Diseases was established in 2005, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of fundus diseases, uveal diseases, and neuro-ophthalmic disorders. The department currently has six physicians, including one associate professor and master’s supervisor, four with doctoral degrees, and one currently pursuing a doctorate. It also employs four technicians, two of whom are associate senior technicians, and twelve nurses. In addition, the renowned ophthalmologist and doctoral supervisor, Professor Zhang Xiaoguang, has been invited as a guest professor of the department.

The department is equipped with the world’s most advanced examination and treatment devices, including the Heidelberg HRA-Ⅱ synchronous retinal and choroidal angiograph, Kowa fundus camera, Topcon anterior segment camera, Roland visual electrophysiology system (conventional and multifocal), Biovision A/B ultrasound, Suowei ultrasound biomicroscope (UBM), Zeiss optical coherence tomography (OCT), Humphrey automated perimeter, Topcon corneal endothelial microscope, Lumenis multi-wavelength fundus laser, Zeiss YAG laser, and lacrimal duct laser, among others.

The department undertakes the diagnosis and treatment of various retinal and uveal diseases, with particular expertise in the management of uveitis, as well as medical and laser treatments for a range of fundus conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, retinal periphlebitis, Coats disease, and choroidal hemangioma. It also performs YAG laser treatments for posterior capsular opacification, laser iridotomy, and posterior synechiolysis. Currently, the department conducts approximately 3,000 fundus angiographies and 4,000 laser treatments annually. In June 2008, it pioneered photodynamic therapy (PDT) in Jilin Province for wet age-related macular degeneration, central serous chorioretinopathy, and choroidal neovascular diseases caused by high myopia, achieving significant therapeutic outcomes.

The department has undertaken multiple research projects and published several academic papers. Its members have frequently participated in domestic and international ophthalmology conferences to foster academic exchange. The department also undertakes teaching responsibilities for undergraduates, postgraduate students, and visiting scholars.
