Our Endoscopy Center was established in 1986 as one of the earliest independent endoscopy departments in the province. It has achieved a high level of expertise in digestive endoscopy diagnosis and treatment and was designated as the "Jilin Provincial Digestive Endoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment Center" by the Jilin Provincial Health Department. With the continuous development of the hospital and the department, the Endoscopy Center has expanded in scale and staff, and its diagnostic and therapeutic techniques have continued to advance alongside improvements in the national digestive endoscopy environment and hardware facilities. Especially in the past decade, with the infusion of dedicated young talent, our digestive endoscopy diagnosis and treatment technology has developed rapidly, reaching an advanced level within the province.
The Endoscopy Center currently has 23 professional medical staff, including 9 doctors. Among them, there are 3 professors and chief physicians, 4 attending physicians, and 2 resident physicians. The team includes 1 medical doctoral degree holder and 6 master's degree holders, forming an academic梯队 structure that combines experienced, middle-aged, and young professionals with a reasonable technical composition. Director Liu Baichun has been engaged in digestive endoscopy since 1989. He is skilled in using gastroscopes and colonoscopes for disease diagnosis and interventional therapy, possessing extensive experience and exceptional technical proficiency in digestive endoscopy. He also serves as a standing committee member of the Jilin Provincial Medical Association Endoscopy Branch.
To better serve patients, and in line with the current development of domestic digestive endoscopy and disease characteristics, our department has established three specialized interventional therapy groups. After six years of relentless effort, we have gradually cultivated high-precision technical experts such as Wei Lijuan, Li Jun'an, and Song Ying. They have become leading figures in interventional therapy for gastrointestinal mucosal diseases (EMR, ESD), ERCP and related diagnostic techniques, and the expansion of benign and malignant digestive tract strictures and stenting. Together, they have performed over 5,000 such advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, alleviating patients' suffering through minimally invasive surgeries.
The Endoscopy Center has 6 specialized procedure rooms, equipped with 9 Olympus 260 series gastrointestinal video endoscopy systems. It is outfitted with more than 70 high-definition electronic gastroscopes, colonoscopes, transnasal gastroscopes, electronic magnifying endoscopes, electronic duodenoscopes, and double-balloon electronic enteroscopes. The center also has one set each of full gastrointestinal endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) examination and treatment equipment, 6 units of electrocautery and electrocision devices, 6 units of argon plasma coagulation (APC) devices (argon knives), and one capsule endoscope. The Endoscopy Center has a professional cleaning and disinfection room that standardizes and expedites the cleaning and disinfection of digestive endoscopes, effectively preventing cross-infection during procedures and ensuring medical safety.
The Endoscopy Center has been performing painless endoscopy diagnosis and treatment for nearly ten years, gradually developing its own technical expertise. We were the first in the country to propose the "crank theory" and "catheter oxygen supply theory," which have placed our painless endoscopy technology at a leading national level. Painless endoscopy allows patients to undergo digestive endoscopy examinations and interventional therapy safely, comfortably, and stably. It improves the disease detection rate during endoscopy, reduces the risks associated with endoscopic treatment, and has gained widespread recognition and praise from patients. Currently, over 80% of our patients choose painless endoscopy, placing us at a leading level in the province. The equipped anesthesia recovery monitoring system also maximizes safety during and after procedures.
The Endoscopy Center performs a wide range of advanced endoscopic treatment techniques:
(1) Gastrointestinal polyp resection;
(2) Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR);
(3) Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD);
(4) Endoscopic resection of submucosal tumors;
(5) Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and common bile duct stone extraction;
(6) Biliary stricture dilation and internal/external drainage for benign or malignant pancreaticobiliary obstruction;
(7) Treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding;
(8) Esophageal variceal ligation, sclerotherapy, and gastric variceal embolization;
(9 Dilation of benign and malignant digestive tract strictures and balloon dilation for achalasia;
(10) Removal of foreign bodies from the digestive tract;
(11) Placement of benign and malignant digestive tract stents;
(12) Resection of early digestive tract cancers;
(13) Gastric lithotripsy;
(14) Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-related treatment techniques.
The Endoscopy Center is responsible for teaching the course "Endoscopy" to undergraduate students, seven-year undergraduate-master's students, and eight-year program students. It also compiled the "Digestive Endoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment" textbook for the Jilin University Twelfth Five-Year Plan, addressing the previous lack of teaching materials and receiving praise from both leadership and students.
Digestive diseases are common and frequently occurring conditions among the population. With the advancement of modern medicine, digestive endoscopy has become accurate and reliable, offering unparalleled advantages in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases compared to other methods. It improves the detection rate of early cancers and allows for therapeutic interventions during the procedure. For some patients with hepatobiliary, bile duct, or pancreatic duct stones and strictures, it eliminates the need for open surgery. Minimally invasive treatments not only promote faster recovery but also cause less trauma, making them the preferred treatment method for many conditions.
The entire medical staff of the Endoscopy Center is committed to providing high-quality service and exquisite technology to bring good news to patients.
