The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University was established in 1948. It has now evolved into a high-quality discipline integrating clinical practice, scientific research, and teaching, enjoying high prestige both within the province and nationwide. Currently, the department is recognized as a Key Clinical Specialty in Jilin Province, the Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Eugenics and Reproduction, the Jilin Provincial Medical Quality Control Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Jilin Provincial Perinatal Medicine Research Center, the Jilin Provincial Eugenics and Genetics Research Center, a Breastfeeding Training Center, the Jilin University Cervical Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Jilin Provincial High-Risk Pregnancy Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Jilin Provincial Critical Maternal Care Center, the Jilin Provincial Prenatal Diagnosis Center, the Changchun City “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” Key Medical Specialty, a Gynecological Endocrinology Training Base of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a Level IV Gynecological Endoscopic Surgery Training Base of the Ministry of Health, and a Jilin Provincial Continuing Medical Education Base. It stands as the core of obstetrics and gynecology teaching, research, and medical care in Jilin Province. For over 60 years, it has received consistent praise from peers and patients both within and outside the province, and has been honored with titles such as the Provincial Health System Women’s Civilization Demonstration Post, the Changchun City March 8th Red Flag Collective, an Advanced Unit in Maternal and Child Health Work during the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, and the 2012 Changchun City Safe Delivery Advanced Unit.

The department currently has 109在职 medical, nursing, and technical staff, including 51 doctors and 51 nurses. Among them, there are 10 professors, 17 associate professors, 18 lecturers, 3 doctoral supervisors, and 23 master’s supervisors. 43 doctors hold a master’s degree or higher, accounting for 84.3% of the medical staff, with 36 holding doctoral degrees, making up 70.6% of the total doctors. The personnel structure is rational, forming a strong academic梯队 with young and middle-aged teachers as the mainstay.

Professor Cui Manhua, the academic leader, serves as the Director of the Jilin Province Obstetrics and Gynecology Society, Director of the Jilin Provincial Medical Quality Control Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Standing Committee Member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Committee Member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Member of the International Society for Gynecologic Endoscopy, Committee Member of the Gynecologic Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Standing Committee Member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Director of the China Eugenics Science Association, Review Expert for the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award and the National Natural Science Foundation, Standing Council Member of the Jilin Provincial Medical Association, among other positions. She also serves as the Associate Editor of the Chinese Journal of Maternal and Child Health, Executive Editorial Board Member of the Progress in Modern Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Editorial Board Member of several journals including the Chinese Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chinese Journal of General Practitioners, Chinese Journal of Practical Gynecology and Obstetrics, Chinese Journal of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Chinese Edition).

The department has a total of 277 open beds, divided into 5 gynecology wards, 3 obstetrics wards, outpatient clinics, a prenatal diagnosis center, a reproductive medicine center, and research laboratories. The annual outpatient volume exceeds 130,000 visits, with nearly 10,000 surgeries and over 13,000住院 patient discharges. Critical cases account for about 12% of discharged patients. Patient satisfaction reaches over 95%. The department undertakes obstetrics and gynecology medical work primarily for Jilin Province and also辐射 surrounding provinces and cities, including consultations for difficult and complicated cases and treatment of severe illnesses. Always adhering to a patient-centered approach, the department actively develops new technologies and therapies. Its specialties include comprehensive treatment primarily through surgery for benign and malignant gynecological tumors; minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, vaginal surgery, and interventional therapy; correction of female reproductive tract malformations and repair surgery for reproductive organ injuries; pelvic floor reconstruction; treatment of gynecological endocrine diseases; management of high-risk pregnancies; assisted reproductive technologies (artificial insemination and IVF for infertility), maternal-fetal blood flow monitoring, prenatal diagnosis; and rescue of critically ill patients. This has elevated the department’s comprehensive level to the foremost position in the province, a leading地位 domestically, and in line with international standards, forming unique diagnostic and treatment characteristics and a development model. For every patient, the department insists on warm, considerate, thorough, and personalized service. From diagnosis to treatment, every detail is carefully attended to, and personalized treatment principles are tailored for each patient, ensuring the department’s comprehensive level remains top in the province, leading domestically, and aligned with international practices, forming unique diagnostic and treatment characteristics and a development model.

Over the past five years, the department has undertaken 3 National Natural Science Foundation projects and over 60 provincial and ministerial-level research projects, with total funding exceeding 7 million RMB. It has published over 600 papers, nearly 50 of which are included in SCI, over 30 books, and 3 patented inventions. It has received 9 Third Prizes for Jilin Province Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 Third Prizes for Jilin Province Natural Science Academic Achievements, 1 Changchun City Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 First Prizes and 1 Second Prize for Jilin Higher Education Technology Achievements. Annually, the department undertakes teaching tasks in obstetrics and gynecology and oncology for five-year, seven-year, and eight-year clinical medicine programs, preventive medicine, and international students at Jilin University, with a total of about 800 students taught each year. It has trained over 100 master’s graduates and over 20 doctoral graduates. While some have pursued further studies abroad, the majority work in large and medium-sized hospitals across China, becoming key professional staff at their respective units. Meanwhile, by hosting academic conferences, symposiums, and training workshops of various scales, the department has invigorated the academic atmosphere within the province, elevated the academic level of obstetrics and gynecology in Jilin Province to a new level, and established the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University as the core and locomotive of the obstetrics and gynecology academic field in the province, enjoying a strong reputation and influence within the domestic obstetrics and gynecology academic community.

In 2011, the department was approved as one of the first national Level IV Gynecological Endoscopic Surgery Training Bases by the Ministry of Health, receiving full recognition from experts of the Ministry. The base is equipped with excellent gynecological endoscopic surgery simulation training equipment, teaching tools, and a strong teaching team with solid theoretical knowledge and over a decade of clinical积累, possessing considerable teaching experience. The base includes an endoscopic basic skills training room, simulated operating room, animal preparation room, instrument preparation room, multimedia lecture hall, and multi-functional conference hall. After mastering simulation training, trainees can fully utilize haptic feedback technology for intelligent simulation training, providing a realistic, safe, and effective learning environment for endoscopic doctors to learn and master endoscopic diagnosis and treatment techniques. Trainees are able to perform endoscopic surgeries upon returning to their home institutions.

The department is currently the Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Eugenics and Reproduction, with a solid technical foundation in embryo culture and molecular biology. All personnel have received training at bases designated by the Ministry of Health. In 2002, the province’s first reproductive medicine center focusing on assisted reproductive technologies was established, with an investment of 5 million RMB to introduce internationally first-class technologies and equipment. In vitro fertilization technology succeeded in the same year, with an average pregnancy rate maintained at 40%-50%, filling many gaps in the field of “test-tube baby” technology in the province. Utilizing the most advanced domestic diagnosis and treatment technologies, it is currently the province’s reproductive medicine center with the strongest technical阵容 and most advanced equipment, primarily staffed by postdoctoral personnel. It is a modern harmonious team integrating clinical diagnosis and treatment with research technology, has passed review by health authorities, and continues to serve a large number of infertility patients with a new面貌.

Currently, the department continues to grow and develop, having become the diagnosis and treatment center for difficult and critical obstetrics and gynecology cases in Jilin Province.
