The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University was established in 1948. It has now developed into a high-quality discipline integrating clinical practice, scientific research, and teaching, enjoying a high reputation both within the province and across the country. Currently, the department is recognized as a Key Clinical Specialty in Jilin Province, the Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Eugenics and Reproduction, the Jilin Provincial Medical Quality Control Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Jilin Provincial Perinatal Medicine Research Center, the Jilin Provincial Eugenics and Genetics Research Center, the Breastfeeding Training Center, the Jilin University Cervical Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Jilin Provincial High-Risk Pregnancy Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Jilin Provincial Critical Maternal Care Center, the Jilin Provincial Prenatal Diagnosis Center, the Changchun City “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” Key Medical Specialty, the Gynecological Endocrinology Training Base of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Level IV Gynecological Endoscopic Surgery Training Base of the Ministry of Health, and the Jilin Provincial Continuing Medical Education Base. It serves as the core institution for obstetrics and gynecology teaching, research, and medical care in Jilin Province. Over the past 60 years, it has received consistent praise from peers and patients both within and outside the province. It has been honored with titles such as the Provincial Health System Women’s Civilization Demonstration Post, the Changchun City March 8th Red Banner Collective, the Advanced Unit in Maternal and Child Health Work during the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, and the Changchun City Safe Delivery Advanced Unit in 2012.

The department currently has 109 medical staff, including 51 doctors and 51 nurses. Among them, there are 10 professors, 17 associate professors, 18 lecturers, 3 doctoral supervisors, and 23 master’s supervisors. Forty-three doctors hold a master’s degree or higher, accounting for 84.3% of the medical staff, with 36 holding a doctoral degree, making up 70.6% of the total. The personnel structure is rational, forming a strong academic梯队 with young and middle-aged teachers as the mainstay.

The discipline leader, Professor Cui Manhua, serves as the Director of the Jilin Province Obstetrics and Gynecology Society, the Director of the Jilin Provincial Medical Quality Control Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology, a Standing Committee Member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a Committee Member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a Member of the International Society for Gynecologic Endoscopy, a Committee Member of the Gynecologic Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, a Standing Committee Member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a Director of the China Eugenics Association, an Expert Reviewer for the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award and the National Natural Science Foundation, and a Standing Council Member of the Jilin Provincial Medical Association. She also serves as the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Maternal and Child Health, the Executive Editorial Board Member of the Progress in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and an Editorial Board Member for several journals, including the Chinese Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Chinese Journal of General Practitioners, the Chinese Journal of Practical Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Chinese Journal of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics (Chinese Edition).

The department has 277 open beds, divided into 5 gynecology wards, 3 obstetrics wards, outpatient clinics, a prenatal diagnosis center, a reproductive medicine center, and research laboratories. The annual outpatient volume exceeds 130,000 visits, with nearly 10,000 surgeries and over 13,000 discharged patients. Critically ill patients account for about 12% of the discharged cases. Patient satisfaction reaches over 95%. The department undertakes obstetrics and gynecology medical work primarily in Jilin Province and extends to surrounding provinces and cities, handling consultations for complex and rare diseases and the diagnosis and treatment of severe conditions. Adhering to a patient-centered approach, the department actively develops new technologies and therapies. Its specialties include comprehensive treatment primarily through surgery for benign and malignant gynecological tumors; minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, vaginal surgery, and interventional therapy; corrective surgery for female reproductive tract malformations and repair surgery for genital tract injuries; pelvic floor reconstruction; treatment of gynecological endocrine diseases; management of high-risk pregnancies; assisted reproductive technologies (artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization for infertility); maternal-fetal blood flow monitoring; prenatal diagnosis; and rescue of critically ill patients. These efforts have elevated the department’s comprehensive level to the leading position in the province and a prominent地位 nationally, aligning with international standards and forming unique diagnostic and treatment characteristics and development models. Each patient receives warm, considerate, thoughtful, and personalized service. From diagnosis to treatment, every detail is carefully managed, with personalized treatment principles tailored to each patient, ensuring the department’s comprehensive level remains first in the province and leading nationally, in line with international standards, and forming unique diagnostic and treatment characteristics and development models.

Over the past five years, the department has undertaken 3 National Natural Science Foundation projects and more than 60 provincial and ministerial-level research projects, with total funding exceeding 7 million yuan. It has published over 600 papers, nearly 50 of which are included in SCI, along with more than 30 books and 3发明专利. It has received 9 third prizes for Jilin Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards, 2 third prizes for Jilin Provincial Natural Science Academic Achievements, 1 Changchun City Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 first prizes and 1 second prize for Jilin Higher Education Technology Achievements. Annually, the department undertakes teaching tasks for five-year, seven-year, and eight-year clinical medicine programs, preventive medicine, and international students in obstetrics, gynecology, and oncology at Jilin University, with a total teaching load of about 800 students. It has trained over 100 master’s graduates and more than 20 doctoral graduates. While some have pursued further studies abroad, the majority work in large and medium-sized hospitals across the country, becoming key业务骨干 in their units. Additionally, by organizing academic conferences, seminars, and training sessions of various scales, the department has enlivened the academic atmosphere in the province, elevated the academic level of obstetrics and gynecology in Jilin Province to new heights, and established the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University as the core and locomotive of the obstetrics and gynecology academic field in the province, with a strong地位 and influence in the national obstetrics and gynecology academic community.

In 2011, the department was approved as one of the first Level IV Gynecological Endoscopic Surgery Training Bases of the Ministry of Health, receiving full recognition from Ministry of Health experts. The base is equipped with excellent gynecological endoscopic surgery simulation training equipment, teaching materials, and a strong teaching team with solid theoretical knowledge and over a decade of clinical experience, providing rich teaching experience. The base includes an endoscopic basic skills training room, a simulated operating room, an animal preparation room, an instrument preparation room, a multimedia electronic classroom, and a multifunctional conference hall. After mastering simulation training, trainees can fully utilize tactile feedback technology for intelligent simulation training, providing a realistic, safe, and effective learning environment for endoscopic doctors to learn and master endoscopic diagnosis and treatment techniques. Upon completion, trainees are capable of performing endoscopic surgeries.

The department is also the Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Eugenics and Reproduction, with a solid foundation in embryo culture and molecular biology techniques. All personnel have received training at bases designated by the Ministry of Health. In 2002, the province’s first reproductive medicine center focused on assisted reproductive technologies was established, with an investment of 5 million yuan to introduce internationally advanced technologies and equipment. In vitro fertilization technology succeeded in the same year, with an average pregnancy rate maintained at 40%-50%, filling multiple gaps in the field of “test-tube baby” technology in the province. Utilizing the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies domestically, it is currently the province’s most technologically powerful and best-equipped reproductive medicine center, primarily staffed by postdoctoral researchers. It is a modern harmonious team integrating clinical diagnosis and treatment with research technology and has passed re-review by health authorities, continuing to serve infertility patients with a new outlook.

Currently, the department continues to grow and develop, becoming the center for the diagnosis and treatment of complex and critical obstetric and gynecological cases in Jilin Province.
