The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University was established in 1948. It has now evolved into a high-quality discipline integrating clinical practice, scientific research, and teaching, enjoying a high reputation both within the province and nationwide. Currently, the department is recognized as a Key Clinical Specialty in Jilin Province, a Key Laboratory of Prenatal and Reproductive Health in Jilin Province, the Medical Quality Control Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology in Jilin Province, the Perinatal Medicine Research Center of Jilin Province, the Prenatal and Genetic Research Center of Jilin Province, a Breastfeeding Training Center, the Cervical Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Jilin University, the High-Risk Pregnancy Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Jilin Province, the Critical Maternal Care Center of Jilin Province, the Prenatal Diagnosis Center of Jilin Province, a Key Medical Specialty in the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" of Changchun City, a Gynecological Endocrinology Training Base of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a Level IV Gynecological Endoscopic Surgery Training Base designated by the Ministry of Health, and a Continuing Medical Education Base in Jilin Province. It stands as the core institution for obstetrics and gynecology teaching, research, and medical care in Jilin Province. Over the past 60 years, it has received consistent praise from peers and patients both inside and outside the province. It has been honored with titles such as "Civilized Women's Post Model in the Provincial Health System," "Changchun City March 8th Red Flag Collective," "Advanced Unit in Maternal and Child Health Work During the Eleventh Five-Year Plan Period," and "Advanced Unit for Safe Delivery in Changchun City in 2012."
The department currently employs 109 medical staff, including 51 doctors and 51 nurses. Among them, there are 10 professors, 17 associate professors, 18 lecturers, 3 doctoral supervisors, and 23 master's supervisors. Forty-three doctors hold a master's degree or higher, accounting for 84.3% of the medical staff, with 36 holding a doctoral degree, representing 70.6% of the total doctors. Professor Cui Manhua, the academic leader of the department, serves as the Director of the Jilin Province Obstetrics and Gynecology Society, Director of the Jilin Province Obstetrics and Gynecology Medical Quality Control Center, Standing Committee Member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Committee Member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Member of the International Society for Gynecologic Endoscopy, Committee Member of the Gynecologic Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, Standing Committee Member of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Director of the China Healthy Birth Science Association, Evaluation Expert for the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award and the National Natural Science Foundation, and Standing Council Member of the Jilin Provincial Medical Association. The department has 277 open beds, divided into 5 gynecology wards, 3 obstetrics wards, outpatient clinics, a prenatal diagnosis center, a reproductive medicine center, and research laboratories. The annual outpatient volume exceeds 130,000 visits, with nearly 10,000 surgeries and over 13,000 discharged patients. Critically ill patients account for approximately 12% of discharges. Patient satisfaction exceeds 95%. The department undertakes obstetrics and gynecology medical work primarily for Jilin Province and also serves surrounding provinces and cities, handling consultations for complex cases and treatment of severe illnesses. Adhering to a patient-centered approach, the department actively develops new technologies and therapies. Its specialties include comprehensive treatment primarily through surgery for benign and malignant gynecological tumors; minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, vaginal surgery, and interventional therapy; corrective surgery for female reproductive tract malformations and repair surgery for genital tract injuries; pelvic floor reconstruction; treatment of gynecological endocrine diseases; management of high-risk pregnancies; assisted reproductive technologies (artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization for infertility); maternal-fetal blood flow monitoring; prenatal diagnosis; and rescue of critically ill patients. These efforts have elevated the department's comprehensive level to the leading position in the province and a prominent status nationally, aligning with international standards and forming unique diagnostic and treatment characteristics and development models. Each patient receives warm, considerate, thorough, and personalized service. From diagnosis to treatment, every detail is carefully managed, and personalized treatment principles are tailored for each patient, ensuring the department's comprehensive level remains first in the province and leading nationally, in line with international practices, forming unique diagnostic and treatment features and development models.
Over the past five years, the department has undertaken 3 National Natural Science Foundation projects and more than 60 provincial and ministerial-level research projects, with total funding exceeding 7 million RMB. It has published over 600 papers, nearly 50 of which are indexed by SCI, along with more than 30 books and 3 patented inventions. The department has received 9 Third Prizes for Jilin Province Science and Technology Progress, 2 Third Prizes for Jilin Province Natural Science Academic Achievements, 1 Changchun City Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 First Prizes and 1 Second Prize for Jilin Higher Education Technology Achievements. Annually, it undertakes teaching tasks for five-year, seven-year, and eight-year clinical medicine programs, preventive medicine, and international students in obstetrics, gynecology, and oncology at Jilin University, teaching around 800 students each year. It has trained over 100 master's graduates and more than 20 doctoral graduates. While some have pursued further studies abroad, the majority work in large and medium-sized hospitals across China, becoming key technical staff in their respective units. Additionally, by organizing academic conferences, seminars, and training sessions of various scales, the department has invigorated the academic atmosphere in the province, elevating the academic level of obstetrics and gynecology in Jilin Province to new heights. It has established itself as the core and locomotive of obstetrics and gynecology academia in Jilin Province, enjoying a strong reputation and influence in the national obstetrics and gynecology academic community.
In 2011, the department was approved as one of the first Level IV Gynecological Endoscopic Surgery Training Bases designated by the Ministry of Health, receiving full recognition from experts of the Ministry. The base is equipped with excellent gynecological endoscopic surgery simulation training equipment, teaching tools, and a strong teaching team with solid theoretical knowledge and over a decade of clinical experience, possessing substantial teaching expertise. The base includes facilities for basic endoscopic skill training, simulated operating rooms, animal preparation rooms, instrument preparation rooms, multimedia lecture halls, and multifunctional conference halls. After mastering simulation training, trainees can fully utilize haptic feedback technology for intelligent simulation training, providing a realistic, safe, and effective learning environment for endoscopic doctors to learn and master endoscopic diagnosis and treatment techniques. Graduates of the program are capable of performing endoscopic surgeries upon returning to their respective institutions.
The department is also the Key Laboratory of Prenatal and Reproductive Health in Jilin Province, with a solid foundation in embryonic culture and molecular biology techniques. All personnel have received training at bases designated by the Ministry of Health. In 2002, the province's first reproductive medicine center focused on assisted reproductive technologies was established, with an investment of 5 million RMB to introduce world-class technology and equipment. In vitro fertilization technology succeeded in the same year, maintaining an average pregnancy rate of 40%-50%, filling multiple gaps in the field of "test-tube baby" technology in the province. Utilizing the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies domestically, it is currently the reproductive medicine center in the province with the strongest technical阵容, primarily composed of postdoctoral personnel, and equipped with the most advanced facilities. It is a modern and harmonious team integrating clinical diagnosis and treatment with scientific research technology, having passed re-evaluation by health authorities and continuing to serve infertility patients with a new outlook.
Currently, the department continues to grow and develop, becoming the center for the treatment of complex and critical obstetrics and gynecology cases in Jilin Province.
