(Wang Min, Report) On August 15, Doctor Manuel Francisco Tańada Roxas, former President of the Philippine Society of Colorectal Surgeons and former President of the Southeast Asian Colorectal Surgeons Association, currently serving as President of the Philippine Society of Surgical Oncology, along with Doctor Marc Paul Jose Lopez, Surgical Consultant at the Philippine General Hospital, visited our hospital (The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University) for academic exchange.
Vice President Yang Wei, along with medical staff from the Department of Radiotherapy and the Department of Colorectal and Anal Surgery, attended the exchange meeting on intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT). At the meeting, Vice President Yang Wei extended a warm welcome to the visiting experts from the Philippines and provided an overview of our hospital’s current status and developments in medical treatment, education, and research. Doctor Roxas expressed his gratitude to the hospital’s leaders and professors and outlined the purpose of his visit. Professor Yang Jianzheng from the Department of Radiology delivered a systematic presentation on the application of intraoperative radiotherapy technology in rectal cancer treatment. Associate Professor Wang Min from the Department of Colorectal and Anal Surgery showcased several surgical videos of colorectal IORT procedures performed at our hospital.
Following the meeting, the two Philippine experts observed an "ISR ultra-low anterior resection combined with intraoperative radiotherapy" surgery performed by Associate Professor Wang Min in the operating room. As the surgery progressed, the experts raised questions, which Associate Professor Wang Min answered in detail while ensuring the procedure remained stable and smooth. His expertise and explanations were highly commended by the two experts.
Laparoscopic ISR surgery is technically challenging and holds significant value for patients undergoing ultra-low anterior resection, though its indications are relatively limited. To expand its applicability, our hospital pioneered the combination of ISR with intraoperative radiotherapy. The key steps performed by Associate Professor Wang Min under laparoscopy, along with the high precision and minimal bleeding characteristic of the procedure, impressed the Philippine experts. Subsequently, Professor Yang Jianzheng’s radiotherapy team demonstrated the preparatory steps for radiotherapy and the methods of intraoperative radiotherapy. Through seamless and precise collaboration with Associate Professor Wang Min’s team, the intraoperative radiotherapy procedure was successfully completed, earning praise from the two experts. They highly commended the content and quality of the exchange, as well as the demonstration of rectal IORT at our hospital, noting that it would serve as an invaluable reference for the implementation of rectal IORT technology at the Philippine Medical City Hospital (TMC, the third-largest hospital in the Philippines) and the Philippine General Hospital.
The Department of Colorectal Surgery at our hospital was the first in Northeast China to perform intraoperative radiotherapy for rectal cancer. With the support and collaboration of multiple disciplines, including anesthesiology, operating room services, and radiotherapy, it has achieved domestic and international leading standards. Patient cases from our hospital have been included in multicenter studies by U.S. national cancer research institutions. Our hospital has registered a single-center study on intraoperative radiotherapy for rectal cancer and has completed over 20 cases of colorectal IORT. In the future, more colorectal surgeons and radiotherapy specialists from various countries and regions will visit our hospital for observation and learning.
