The Department of Trauma Surgery, Orthopedic Hospital of The Second Norman Bethune Hospital of Jilin University took the lead in the province in performing minimally invasive fracture surgeries. Guided by the principles of minimally invasive techniques, it has innovatively developed minimally invasive treatments for fractures in various parts of the body, significantly reducing surgical trauma and shortening fracture healing time, achieving international first-class standards.

Recently, Professor Yazid from UKM Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Professor Ahmad from KPJ Specialist Hospital in Penang, Malaysia, visited the Department of Trauma Surgery of our hospital to learn minimally invasive internal fixation techniques for fractures and engage in academic exchange.

Professor Wu Dankai, Vice President of the Orthopedic Hospital and Director of the Department of Trauma Surgery, along with all medical staff of the department, attended the academic exchange meeting. At the meeting, Director Wu Dankai extended a warm welcome to the Malaysian experts who had traveled from afar and provided an overview of the current status and developments in medical treatment, teaching, and research at our hospital. Professors Yazid and Ahmad expressed their gratitude to the leaders and professors of our hospital and highlighted that the main purpose of their visit was to study and exchange knowledge on minimally invasive surgical techniques in trauma surgery. Each medical team in the Department of Trauma Surgery systematically elaborated and introduced their distinctive diagnostic and treatment technologies. Director Wu Dankai demonstrated relevant techniques of minimally invasive surgical procedures in trauma surgery to the Malaysian experts.

After the meeting, the two Malaysian experts observed two surgeries performed by Director Wu Dankai in the operating room: "Onion-Skin Bone Grafting for Femoral Nonunion" and "MIPPO Technique for Treating Complex Tibia and Fibula Fractures." Subsequently, the experts collaborated with Director Wu Dankai to complete a "Robot-Assisted Closed Reduction and Internal Fixation for Femoral Neck Fracture" using the province’s first TiRobot II orthopedic surgical robot.

As the surgeries progressed intensively step by step, the two Malaysian experts raised questions continuously. Director Wu Dankai, while ensuring the procedures proceeded smoothly, provided detailed explanations based on the actual surgical maneuvers, which was highly appreciated by the experts. They spoke highly of the content and quality of the exchange, as well as the demonstration of minimally invasive surgical techniques at our hospital. They emphasized that this experience would serve as an invaluable reference for implementing MIPPO techniques in treating complex limb fractures at their respective hospitals in Malaysia.

The Department of Trauma Surgery at our hospital performs over 2,000 surgeries annually. It has achieved internationally leading standards in the treatment of pelvic and acetabular fractures, complex fractures of the limbs and joints, as well as in addressing bone defects, nonunions, and osteomyelitis. Director Wu Dankai’s team pioneered the axillary approach for scapular fractures, filling a gap in global medical practice. The team also proposed the "concealed approach for anterior pelvic ring," with clinical research findings published in JBJS, the world’s top orthopedics journal.

Our department was the first in the province to perform minimally invasive fracture surgeries. Under the guidance of minimally invasive principles, it has creatively developed minimally invasive treatments for fractures in various parts of the body, significantly reducing surgical trauma and shortening healing time, reaching international advanced levels. These techniques have been published by People’s Medical Publishing House, filling a domestic gap and gaining widespread promotion across China with substantial social benefits.

A series of innovative technologies have been implemented, including robotic-assisted fracture treatment and the lateral rectus abdominis approach for acetabular fractures, positioning the department at the forefront nationally. Furthermore, it took the lead in the province to optimize the subspecialty structure of trauma orthopedics into dedicated groups including shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle, pelvis, pediatric orthopedics, osteomyelitis, and minimally invasive navigation—each group ranking among the most advanced in China.
